Walking the World

Updated June 2026

Since I was in high school I have been exploring new places and tracking all of the cool spots I found. Recently I have come across Jeremy Maluf's project to walk every street, trail, and park on the planet, and I have taken on the challenge!

Although I have been casually tracking where I have been for years, I want to now start being more systematic in my approach to tracking and keeping record of where I have been. This will be a continual work in progress but I want to use this as a starting point to see where my starting point is and to keep track of this side quest.

Data Collection

First I need to figure out what data I currently have available and create a system for keeping track of this data. I have been using Google Timeline as I am a big fan of google maps but unfortunately the web version was removed some time ago and now there is a worse version that is only accessible on mobile devices. The current sources of data I have are the past 18 months of data from google timeline, and activity data from Strava.

My main addition to my current setup is using an app called Arc Timeline 4 this will stay running on my phone and will keep track of everywhere that I have been.

For putting the data all together there are a few websites that help out with this such as City Strides and wandrer but these have expensive subscriptions and I wanted to make something that I have more control over.

I made this page to help with this challenge. Right now this page does the following:

  1. Create a single file location_log for all location data
  2. Import all of your location data to the single file
  3. Visualize the data on a map and show stats about it

New York City

I was born about an hour away from NYC and I currently live here for grad school. I have a good amount of miles already walked here but I am now making an effort to walk every street in the city starting with Manhattan.
